Meditations on Mother’s Day

My mother in between her two daughters.

There are few roles as rewarding as the ones we play in our families — daughter, sister, niece, cousin, aunt, wife, mother — and as far as roles go, being a mother is distinct from any other.

It requires a willingness to live in the moment — to join your child and bask in the one million ethereal nano-moments of discovery, delight, and joy of new life — and also requires the physical and mental presence to nourish, nurture, steer.

Constraining yet motivating, humdrum and transcendent, monotonous yet inspiring — motherhood simultaneously hems you in and propels you forward.

As for me and my House, we will serve the Lord.

That metamorphosis from girl to matriarch will test your faith, tame your tongue and require many moments of girding your heart.

The 1st 10 years of the Journey.

Oh, the reward! Like the feeling of being snugly wrapped in a beautiful, luxurious pashmina — it crowns your head, shelters your vision and comforts your frame. A mother’s recompense lives, breathes and speaks for generations.

Happy Mother’s Day to the girls who sacrifice their bodies, harness their strength and distill their essence into the children they love, birth, adopt, support and raise. Happy Mother’s Day to me! I love you.
